Ridiculously built up and touristy. It gets extremely crowded, especially on public holidays. This is what's called a "tourist trap" in the west. Long lines and lots of shops, horse rides, camel rides, yak rides, etc. The view of the lake is nothing special, it just looks like a regular rocky beach. However, this is one of the only places you are allowed to see the lake, as most of it is fenced in and controlled. You are not allowed to freely explore and find your own section of the lake like you would be anywhere else in the world. You take a shuttle from the visitor's center to the lake beach. Entrance costs 30 RMB. This would not exist outside of China because there is literally no reason for it to exist. The government decided to will this into existance. Overtourism is a serious problem in China, but no one here sees it as a negative. Most Chinese people see it as progress and only view it positively. I find it very frustrating.
