Lovely place, gorgeous breath taking views (literally for me, I was so outta breath going up) at the peak despite being cloudy and super windy, BUT NOT FOR UNPREPARED first time hikers. if beginners (challenging level 4/5) be prepared for Steep 3-4hr vertical climb up (each step is almost knee high nearing top) to reach the peak and another 3-4hrs down. DO NOTE that if you reach the peak by sunset, better to leave via Pak Kung Au (where you will end up at the road with bus stop). If you plan to end your hike via Ngong Ping you will end up at wisdom path, Ngong Ping fun walk which will lead to Ngong Ping bus Terminus which is just an open space for tour buses (No public bus goes there). There are no Taxis (difficult to get uber) after sunset, wisdom path area is pitch black which is creepy AF. The distance to from the plaza to the nearest bus stop is 3-4km prolly about 40mins walk away. My advice is to start early regardless your experience. check the weather, if end point at gong ping plaza have a car waiting at the plaza/ terminus. Pack food & at least 1L water, my trip was in June 2023 when it was rainy season. I can only sum up my experience with 5 words: Inexperience, Stupid, Treacherous, Exhausted, Crazy.

This is the highest peak in Lantau Island, elevation 934 m. It is indeed a wise choice to come to this place in December. You can either take a bus to half way, or walk all the way up along the road, then turn into a path. It is quite boring to walk on the road, the cars are really loud. Personally I don’t think it’s pleasant to walk along the road, but the road part takes up 300 meters ish of the whole hike. The path is very well maintained, not difficult to walk along. Sometimes step stones are bigger. You need more endurance to complete. Once you reach the top, you can continue in another direction and go to the Big Buddha. There's no shade all the way. If you come here in the summer, be sure to bring plenty of water.

Took the train into Tung Chung and hiked up here early one Saturday at start of March - it's about 10km with about 1km elevation - actually more as you are going up and down. Need a good level of fitness or need to be pretty stubborn :) - ascent is very steep and unrelenting in sections. Be sure to take enough water (~1.5L+) and some snacks. At the peak it can be pretty chilly so an extra layer is advisable. Definitely need sensible trainers or hiking shoes. Walked down to the Big Buddha and then got the cable back all the way back down to Tung Chun. Recommend setting off early (take 1st train) to avoid the crowds and make the most of it. I'm not very fit so legs were sore the next day but an altogether awesome experience!

A bronze statue of big Buddha sits on top of the mountain. A 5 km cable car is one of the ways to reach there. One of the most scenic routes. If you want to go to big buddha, book your ticket via klook. They have a separate queue at the tungchung station. If it’s a weekend or a holiday in hongkong and if you are planning to visit big Buddha, you will end up spending atleast 2-3 hours in queue. Klook saves you from the long wait and can cut your time go 20-25 minutes. Another option is to avoid the morning time. If u reach tune chung station by 2 pm , you will avoid the queue waiting time as most of people rush for morning time.

Lantau Peak 934m above sea level!!! Almost 2 times higher than Victoria Peak. There’s nothing much up there except a rest point and a point to take photos like saying “You made it”! There’s a shelter there to seek cover if weather turns bad. From here you can either go Pak Kung Au or Ngong Ping Village. I hiked from Pak Kung Au all the way here and back to Ngong Ping. The hike down Ngong Ping isn’t that scenic with few rest points (I’m talking about the popular route) but the hike from Pak Kung Au to here was scenic with multiple rest points. Lucky the weather was ok and it was not sunny but cloudy then.

Lantau Peak is right next to Sunset Peak and is the Secoend Highest in the Country With outstanding views, this is the hike you have to do when in Hong Kong. Via Pak Kung Au, which is the shortest route you can take. Take an MTR to Tung Chung and then the 3M Bus. Ask the driver to stop off at Pak Kung Au. From there, you’ll be by the trail that goes up to Lantau Peak. Now, depending what pace you go, you can get to the top from anywhere between 1-2.5 hours. The trail is essentially uphill so be prepared to sweat a little, especially with the humidity of Hong Kong.
