Lantau Trail is made of 12 stages and is a loop trail starting at Mui Wo. The trail is well-maintained and marked with yellow directional posts and distance posts (L001-L139). You can either do it clockwise (stages 12 to 1) or anti-clockwise (stages 1-12), the latter preferred for a few reasons. Firstly, you'll get to do the most challenging parts (sections 1-3) conquering the Sunset and Lantau peaks on the first day.
For the second day sections 4,5,6,7 are ideal as it first goes up quite a bit, but from Tai O onwards you enjoy the stroll along the seaside till Fan Lau or Kau Ling (depending where you decide to pitch your tent over the night). Kau Ling is a better option as the path from the beach will bring you then directly to the start of section 8.
As for the third day, it's mostly paved and flat along the catchwater, with some parts of the trail going on rocky and dusty surfaces. We advise to finish sections 8,9,10 & 11 all the way to Pui O, where you can camp.
This way the day 4 has the last 9.5km left of the section 12, leading you to Mui Wo.
Along the trail there places to restock your food such as Mui Wo, Ngong Ping village, Tai O, Fan Lau, Shui Hau, Pui O. As many parts are unshaded appropriate gear and water supply are necessary, however in the emergency case you can restock your water at the public bathroom unless there is an explicit sign saying that water isn't potable (but this is to be done at your own risk and should be done only in...
