One of the most popular hikes through the Ma On Shan Country Park is the MacLehose Trail Section #4 which enters the park in the north from Shui Long Wo and makes a number of ascents up to a ridge line known as the hunchbacks and continues through the country park for nearly 13 kilometres to Tate's Cairn and the beginning of Section #5 of the trail.
Section #4 is a challenging hike and takes some degree of fitness to clear comfortably. There are a lot of long upward stretches from start to finish accompanied by outstanding views from the high elevation of the ridge line of Sai Kung and the Inner Port Shelter as well as Ma On Shan, the Tolo Harbour and Channel. Highlights include Pyramid Hill, Ngong Ping (Ma On Shan) and Buffalo Pass.
To access MacLehose Section #4 exit bus routes 299 or 99 to Sai Kung at Kei Ling Ha / Shui Long Wo where you will find a nice pit stop with public toilets, beverage vending machines, country park maps and a few outdoor tables where you can sort our your daypacks and wait for friends who may be joining your hiking group for this stage. At the end of the trail section at Tai Lo Shan / Tate's Cairn, you are still some distance to public transportation points where you can make your way home.
If you want to just focus on the first part of Section #4, taking in the rewarding viewpoints around Pyramid Hill and Ma On Shan Peak, then at roughly the halfway point, you will find yourself at Ngong Ping, a hillside plateau with rewarding views, wild camping and perhaps even paraglider activity if visiting on weekends. Nearby, there is a junction where you can exit the MacLehose Trail by way of the intersecting Ma On Shan Country Park Trail. Here you can opt to make way to either Sai Kung to the south or Ma On Shan in the opposite direction. Both hikes are downhill from the junction and take around 60-90 minutes depending on your...
