Situated within the boundaries of Sai Kung Country Park, Sheung Yiu is a Hakka village that was built in the 19th century by the Wong clan, which originally came from Bao’an County in Guangdong Province. Constructed on a raised platform with a watchtower overlooking the entrance, the village features a row of eight houses with a drying terrace at the front. The village prospered due to its lime kiln, as there was a great demand for its production, which was used as mortar in construction and as fertiliser in agriculture. The advent of modern bricks and cement, however, led to its gradual decline. The village was opened as the Sheung Yiu Folk Museum in 1983 after full restoration. Read moreA short walk from the main road, MacLeHose Trail Section 1, and down Sheung You Country trail (~15 min) you will come across this structure. Eddie Wong and Mr Wong were there when I swung by.
Eddie will share with you an engaging story about the History of the Place, discussions of Feng Shui, Chinese History, Pirates, History of Chinatown Bristol, and lost gold. Make sure to bring water too, air conditioning not included. Also check the tides, I missed out on the high tide and the pier was...

I was particularly impressed by the stories told by Eddie Wong, the ambassador of this well-maintained grade 1 declared monument and the descendants of the Wong's family, a Hakka family known for manufacturing limestone in Qing Dynasty.
For those Hong Kongers who studied Chemistry, you should remember the limestone industry of Hong Kong, the "King of limestone" Wong Yat Wah, and the Wong's family. This is the "ancestral home" of the family in Sai Kung. If you are lucky enough, you will meet Eddie who will enthusiastically tell you the history of the Wong's including how they fought the pirates, escaped from these pirates, and made it home in a foreign land.
Come pay a visit if...
