Unique and unexpected canyon known locally as Hong Kong's mini Grand Canyon, located around 10 minute hike northeast of Por Lo Shan.

The Mini Grand Canyon wouldn't be particularly special in desert like destinations elsewhere but seems completely out of place here in Hong Kong. You can walk around the rim of the canyon and peer down into its shallow depths admiring the earth's layers and colour changes. In the distance, you will see more silty and grooved peaks that make up the Hinterland. To the west and north you can see Shenzhen in the distance as well.

Note: There are a few ways to hike up to Por Lo Shan and the mini-Grand Canyon. Probably the most convenient is to make way to San Wai Court by way of the Sui Hong MTR Station and Light Rail lines 505 or 615, getting off at San Wai and then walking through the estates until reaching the paved footpath that leads up to Por Lo Shan. The canyon is further northwest from there.

Alternatively, you can combine with a longer hike that takes in Castle Peak although I'd only recommend combining if you have good hiking fitness, sufficient water, sun protection and time...

Castle Peak, 2nd sharpest HK peak, Pineapple Hill aka TuenMun Great Canyon (blessful to have such a perfect weather, if not will be toasted) More challenging to go down than up due to the many bald patches which are rocky, sandy & steep. Have to keep on checking gps due to many forks to navigate Some stretches have no gps signal, but at some points received sms from...

Nevertheless this rock formation is unique in Hong Kong. Took lots of pictures, came out pretty well. Instagrammable I believe. Unfortunately no sunset the day we came up. It turned a bit misty ...
