It's about 30 minutes by car from the city center. You get a free guide with your ticket. You can see 4 caves. Caves aren't as grand in scale as Mogao because they were for merchants passing by on their way to the west on the Silk Road so they're more utilitarian. For example, there aren't a lot of paintings depicting Buddhist stories and parables, just a ton of Buddhas. We went thr last week of December and were the only two people in the entire site.
