Yunnan Ethnic Village — Attraction in Kunming

The best part of our trip to Kunming. This village covers a huge area and you could easily spend the entire day here. It was very interesting to learn about the different ethnic groups in Yunnan and each group was quite well represented.

For non-Chinese speakers, it would be good to rent an English speaking guide to explain the different parts of the village to you as everything is mostly in Chinese. I would also recommend to attend the shows performed by the different ethnic groups at different intervals throughout the day. There are night shows as well! We were exhausted running around trying to catch the shows but it was worth it. Please wear comfortable shoes, as you’ll be on your feet all day. Otherwise you could also rent a buggy / bicycle / etc for those of you who can’t walk that much.

I’d definitely recommend this to any tourist coming to Kunming! It’s not too far from the city Center so you could either call for a Didi or take a bus or subway there. (The subway is a bit of a walk...

I have been to this village many times and really like spending the day here. I go mid week while my friends are at work, weekends there are too many people.

I have always found it possible to sit by the water and enjoy the atmosphere and peace of the village.

I have sat and spent time with the actors in between the shows and eaten and drunk with them. We try to talk about their culture in broken Chinese/English and talk about the places that I have been in Yunnan.

This is a great place to learn more about Yunan and its many minorities. It is an open air museum, similar to a skansen, with lots of different traditional buildings. There are also many performances of singing, music, and dancing. The explanations are in two languages, one of which is english. The park is very big so visiting most attractions takes at least half a day.
