I really enjoyed my visit to visit Fujian tulous which has an interesting history and also the amazing Fujian Hakka food here! It’s also a unesco world heritage site. It’s a must visit if you’re in this region of China! These are not just decorative buildings as there are really local Hakka people living here (so do be respectful when touring the buildings and don’t be too noisy)!
There’s 2 main areas here with tulous - Nanjing County & Yongding County. Nanjing is famous for the Tianluokeng cluster where 四菜一汤is, 4 round tulou and 1 square tukou. I mainly visited Yongding - where you can find King of Tulou, Chengqilou 承启楼 in Gaobei cluster + Prince of Tulou, Zhenchenglou 振成楼 in the Hongkeng cluster - didn’t manage to go to Chuxi cluster yet.
It was a great experience. Hongkeng cluster was much bigger with many smaller tulous, I think there’s quite a number of residents there. Gaobei cluster is mainly a few bigger tulous incl the king!
This Qiaofulou is the smaller of the 2 round tulous in the Gaobei cluster. Yet, it’s still pretty big. As it’s only one layer, it’s easy to admire the beauty here. Lined with Chinese lanterns gives it a nice atmosphere. The first level has mainly been converted to shops, so you can do some browsing too!
I’ll recommend to get a local guide if you can understand mandarin. We chanced upon some tulou locals who offered tour guide services (they do have local tour guide license).
Highly recommend to visit tulou area, stay at the Yongding Tulou Xiangxu Tianya Mingyue immersive Theater Theme B&B, and get a...
