Cave of the Immortal (仙人洞) is one of the most spectacular walks and historically important religious sites on Lushan, a holy mountain south of Wuhan. The immortal is Lu Dongbin, one of the most popular deities in Taoism. According to legend, it was here in the 8th century that he meditated until he became immortal. (Note: the standard translation of the Chinese word "xianren" 仙人 is "immortal" and not "fairy," which in today's English conjures up Tinkerbell or some little being with wings. Can someone fix the name of this location? It's completely ridiculous to use the outdated word "fairy.") I spent a day here in 2016 and talked to Taoist priests who still walk the mountains and live in the caves. The place is at times overrun with tourists, so my advice is to go early on a weekday morning, or in foggy or rainy weather. That way you avoid the weekend crowds. Nearby you can see the site of the Lushan Conference in 1959, when Mao silenced critics and made the Great Famine (1958-61) one of the worst in recorded history.
