至北宋時期，大相國寺簡稱「相國寺」，地位和規模達到鼎盛，轄64禪、律院，占地540畝，僧眾數千人，不但是當時全國的佛教中心，也是全國各地商人在京城開封的商品集散中心。據《燕翼詒謀錄》一書說道：「東京相國寺乃瓦市也，僧房散處，而中庭兩廡可容萬人，凡商旅交易，皆萃其中。四方趨京師以貨物求售、轉售他物者，必由於此。」宋《東京夢華錄》載：「相國寺每月五次開放萬姓交易，珍禽奇獸，無所不有。第三門皆動用什物，庭中設彩幕露屋義鋪，賣蒲合、簟席、屏幃、洗漱、鞍轡、弓劍、時果、脯臘之類。近佛殿，孟家道冠、王道人蜜煎，趙文秀筆及潘谷墨，占定兩廊，皆諸寺師姑賣繡作、領抹、花朵、珠翠頭面、生色銷金花樣幞頭帽子、特髻冠子、絛線之類。殿後資聖門前，皆書籍、玩好、圖畫及諸路罷任官員土物香藥之類。後廊皆日者貨術傳神之類。」寺內三門閣上並後殿資聖門，各有金銅所鑄羅漢五百尊、佛牙等，左右有兩座琉璃塔，寺內有智海、惠林、寶梵、河沙東西塔院，每到齋會時，供應三五百份飲食茶果，很快就能辦好。大殿兩廊，皆宋朝名臣名士筆跡，左壁畫熾盛光佛降九鬼（九曜）百戲，右壁畫佛降鬼子母揭盂。殿庭供獻樂部馬隊之類。大殿朵廊，皆...
