In Buddhist tradition, "tongue relic" (舌舍利, shé shèlì) refers to a special type of relic believed to be left behind after the cremation of a highly revered monk or spiritual teacher. One of the most famous stories involves the Buddhist monk and translator Kumārajīva.
Kumārajīva (344-413 CE) was a renowned Buddhist scholar and translator from the Kingdom of Kucha (modern-day Xinjiang, China). He is celebrated for his extensive translations of Buddhist scriptures into Chinese, which had a profound impact on the spread and development of Buddhism in China.
According to legend, Kumārajīva predicted that if his translations were faithful and true to the original teachings, his tongue would remain unscathed during his cremation. After his death, it was reported that his tongue indeed did not burn, leaving behind what is known as the "tongue relic."
