I entered by the South gate as I was told that was the place to hire a bike. It was a bit tricky finding the way to the ticket office, it's inside the walls, not outside. You can buy tickets there with cash if you don't have Alipay.
Bike hire is inside too, and they spoke english to explain that you have 3hrs, you can drop off at multiple locations and collect your deposit..hire for 3 hrs 45 Y, deposit 100Y
The city walls are very wide, 10-15m wide on top. Loads of space. Beautiful hanging lanterns everywhere and fortification spread around at regular stages plus the towers at each corner, plus a museum of the history too and some lovely photos from about 1910 of thre walls before restoration and suits of armour and swords.
