Karakul Lake Another stop on the Karakorum Highway, Karakul Lake is also located in the Xin Jiang province between Pakistan and China. At an altitude of 3,600m, it is the highest lake of the Pamir plateau, near the junction of the Pamir, Tian Shan and Kunlun mountain ranges. There are two Kirgiz settlements along the shore of Karakul lake, a small number of yurts about 1 km east of the bus drop-off point, and a village with stone houses located on the western shores (staying with locals is possible). Horse, camel and moto rides around the lake are available, as well as trekking. Summer is the best time to visit, though it’s cool year round in this mountainous area. Wikipedia has a travel guide

A magical place. There are families who live in Yurts who will let you stay the night. It is a great way to give back to the community as they have minimal ways to support themselves. Even if you can't speak the local dialect, you can get by with some clever sign language. Tough place to get to though, have to find a private driver at the train station and go through several military check points.

Great scenic spot! Make sure you leave early from Kasghar since getting the required permit might take a while, plus the travel is quite long (4h each way). There is another lake close by - make sure you visit both.
