Beautiful nature (1 star for that) but for the rest, it was a quite appalling experience. First, when arriving in the tourist center to buy the tickets, tje place has more a vibe of a shopping center than a natural reserve entrance. The price is a bit steep at almost 100 RMB per person but it could be worse. The fact that you can not simply walk in by yourself (must have a car or take one of their busses which have a prefixed route) was mindboggling. This brings me to the next point about the fact that there were no hiking trails whatsoever. With the busses, you are going to stop at specific locations/viewpoints, that have small shops selling overpriced an unauthentic stuff (food, drinks, dresses etc), were you can take a couple of nice pictures before moving on to the next viewpoint to do the same thing all over again. There were, in our case at the second stop, fake yourts to give you the illusion of authenticty and philantropic immersion (nobody never lived in those yourts) and they were in the process of builsing a new, bigger one just next to them. Then there were some babygoats attached to a pole with which you could take some "cute" pictures and a +- 25 meter long lane dedicated for a ridiculously short and dull camel ride for 30RMB. There was also the possibility for a horse ride which looked longer and more apoealing but I didn't do it due to the long waiting time. There were a lot of fenced of places were you couldn't go and the unfenced ones, where you theoretically could go, were just the huge grasslands but, as mentionned, without any hiking trails (no incentive to explore them too far)... There was for my taste too much police presence on that one single road where hundreds of busses were driving up and down at all times. Many people that were there looked more like they would go for dinner to a 3 star michelin restaurant and just took some superficial picture of them and the places for self profilation on social media. Many of them looked like they wouln't even be able to differentiate between a palmtree and a pinetree. The whole experience was very fake (I like to use the word "Disneyland") and I never really got immersed into the pristine nature that was all around me. I always felt that there was a huge (emotional) distance between me and the place where I was. It's like when you prepare yourself to go for a snorkeling/diving trip into the ocean but you find yourself in...

Read moreA beautiful, vast field of grassland where the nomadic Kazakhs live. Sadly, it's somewhat over commercialised. Access is controlled to a few designated spots, and one has to pay ¥80/hour for horseback riding up the higher grounds. The path is muddy if it rains and there are litters, too. Hope all visitors and the locals could treasure and keep this scenic place clean and free from...
