On June 19, we spent about 4.5 hours travelling from Harbin to Qiqihar just to catch the 2 PM feeding of the Red-Crowned Cranes at Zhalong Wetland. It was a really hot and sunny day, and the place was packed with tourists all hoping to see the same thing.
Since our tour bus could only park at the entrance, we had to walk quite a distance under the sun to get inside. There was also a short boat ride where they showed us a big painted, man-made crane egg — not quite the real thing, but interesting enough — before we finally reached the crane viewing spot.
When it was time, we only got a few seconds to see the cranes fly overhead — beautiful, but over so fast! After that, we were guided to walk to the museum, where we saw displays of different crane species and other animals. We also went up to the top floor to enjoy a nice view overlooking the Zhalong Wetland.

Read moreThe location is not far from Qiqihar City. Zhalong Nature Reserve is a vast area of wetlands and a lake. It is a natural conservation dedicated to the Red Crown Cranes ( Dan Ting He ). Here is where some cranes are breed in captivity and are set free to feed on decinated times each day. There are also wild cranes. Visitors can watch them feed from a huge platform in the middle of the lake.To get there, visitors can either walk through walkways ( takes about 45 minutes ) or pay for a two way ride by boat ( takes about 10 minutes ) can enjoy views of the lake and the wetlands.
