Tianmen Mountain is a spiritual place steeped in legends and customs. It's unclear if the mountain itself pertains to any particular religion but there is a beautiful Buddhist temple at the top. You can take a cable car half way up the mountain which will deposit you close to the bottom of a huge, steep staircase leading to a huge natural stone arch called Heaven's Gate. Don't worry, there's also a lift. After the gate there's a series of long escalators to the top of the mountain. The mountain is topped by dense jungle and the perimeter is a sheer cliff all the way round. There are walkways fixed to the cliff face, some made of glass which is scary. A brisk walk round the perimeter will take about an hour but you should allow two because you will be enticed into the jungle by enchanting passages leading to beautiful places. There's a serene ski lift taking you from the back of the mountain to the centre which I strongly advise you to take a ride on. At the front of the mountain you can take a cable car all the way to Zhangjiaje town. You should allow four hours to experience the whole place. In June 2025 it cost about 500 yuan to visit. Last entry is 4pm. Regardless of which entrance you choose YOU WILL ALWAYS NEED TO START YOU TOUR AT THE CABLE CAR STATION IN ZHANGJIAJIE TOWN and a bus will take you to the other entrance if that's where you're going. Tianmen Mountain is not included in the Zhangjiajie National Forrest...
