Comuna 13 was once known as the most dangerous place in Colombia, but time changes and things have changed. With the power of local people, this place was transformed into one the most interesting places in Medellin. And we wanted to discover it in person. We booked this tour in the afternoon after the paragliding in San Felix. We arrived there using the metro. When we got off the metro, it was a bit overwhelming. Not sure which way to go to the tour office. We called the tour company and they made the first impression by coming to meet us at the metro station. The tour consists of a lot of walking up the stairs to the top of the community, some parts were easier as escalators were used. Our tour guide was fluent in English and knowledgeable. We explained all the details and history about the painting, places and people. The community was vibrant, colorful and full of energy. We had a great time enjoying the view of Medellin on the top of the community. The local homemade ice cream was provided as a part of the tour. A lot of choices of local fruit flavors which will be difficult to choose. But trust me, all of them were good. We really enjoyed this tour and would recommend anyone who visited Medellin to come here. It will be one of the most memorable experiences Medellin has to offer.

Comuna 13 in Medellín is a vibrant, colorful neighborhood bursting with life, history, and incredible street art. Everywhere you turn, breathtaking murals and graffiti tell stories of the community's transformation-from a once dangerous area to a symbol of hope and creativity. Visiting in the early morning allows you to capture the best photos and videos before the crowds arrive. The locals are warm and welcoming, enhancing the experience with music, street performances, and rap improvisations that bring the area to life. You'll also find plenty of food stalls and vendors offering reasonably priced souvenirs, though it's essential to bring pesos, as most do not accept credit cards or USD. Exploring the neighborhood on foot is a must to fully appreciate its charm, but be prepared for steep inclines, narrow passages, and stairs. Luckily, a series of outdoor escalators makes the ascent more manageable. Comfortable shoes are highly recommended since you'll be walking extensively through the steep walkways. Along the way, you'll encounter picturesque city views and opportunities to immerse yourself in local culture. We spent several hours wandering through the lively neighborhood and found it to be one of the highlights of our trip to Medellín.

Such an interesting place, with a difficult history, and hope for the future. Fronds insisted on taking a tour but could have done without. We met at the metro station and climbed all the way up to the new road, using the escalators for part of the way. There is beautiful street art to see and the view from the top is great. We did learn the history of the place from the guid and she was a local who is involved in some projects to help the neighborhood. So I felt our money went to a good place at least. Otherwise I would have preferred time to walk around by myself and appreciate the art a bit more. Important piece of advice- it’s super hot and sunny- must have a hat! We thought it’ll be chilly once we went of the mountain but quite the opposite. Got sunburned! Another advices we got from a local we met before- don’t buy anything on the street or give money to the children!

Comuna 13 is definitely worth a visit when in Medellín. The history of this neighborhood is quite sad but it appears that the invasion by the government in 2002 has really turned this place around and created a mini local economy for those still residing there. It's recommended to take a tour here as you'll get to learn a lot more information and behind the scenes stories about the neighborhood and learn more about how things operate these days. What was once the most dangerous place in the world is now the most visited destination in Medellín. One tip that you must follow is to avoid this place on the weekends as there are thousands and thousands of people coming and going from all directions and it can get overly crowded. Do yourself a favor and visit during the weekdays to avoid the chaos.
