probably one of the most beautiful churches i’ve ever seen 👀 built right into a canyon wall, with the guáitara river flowing underneath. the mix of neo-gothic design + natural setting makes it feel unreal.
getting here is easy from Ipiales (short taxi ride). the path down is lined with vendors — snacks, souvenirs, even guinea pig (cuy), which is a traditional andean dish. honestly, that walk feels like part of the experience.
inside, the atmosphere is different — families leave plaques thanking for miracles, and the original image of the virgin mary is still visible on the rocks.
tip: wear comfy shoes (lots of stairs), bring small cash, and download offline maps since signal is patchy. plan at least 2–3 hours to explore slowly.
if you can, take the cable car on the way back — amazing views over the canyon, and for me it was perfect timing when the rain started 🌧️
