The battle of the Vargas swamp was one of the most significant battles in Bolivar's campaign to liberate Nueva Granada. The best English language account of this campaign, including a thorough description of this battle and with a focus on the British contribution (but also offering a good general description including the charge of the 14 Lancers) is Ben Harper's "Conquer or die!", the motto of the British Legion.

The monument itself - dating from 1969/70 - is impressive and is n busy days guides in period dress will tell the tale of the battle, the charges of the Lancers and the British Legion under James Rooke that arguably changed the outcome of the battle, the campaign and thus the history of Colombia.

Plenty of cheap parking. I recommend across the road where the stalls are as you'll want to go to the museum and for a coffee (I recommend Meson de los...

There are places and moments that you long to go and see them personally, because they seem attractive to you, or because they confirm you something that you either learned or heard in school! In Colombia's history, this is one of those places! The swamp was where the final battle that brought freedom to our nation was fought, and it is awesome to be able to see it by yourself and know that many men and women gave their lives so I could be now here writing these lines. May the Lord bless those men and women who offered their lives to give us freedom! This is the monument where this...

Very historical place in Paipa - Duitama circuit. It is the bravery of those ancestors that Colombia is a free country. The guides in historical costumes are a highlight in the monument. The monument is in the middle of fincas and mountains which adds beauty to the place. The monument is very well maintained and the museum nearby shows the life of the people during that time. The monument with each of the rider and the horse is intricately carved and expressive.
