Worth the trip, for flamingos as well as all other birds. If you like sea food, there are restaurants on the beach where you can eat fresh shrimps, fish and small lobsters.
They are tours all included but it is pretty easy to do it on your own. From the main concrete road (the one going from Santa Marta to Riohacha, get any bus doing this route and ask to be drop at Camarones) get on a mototaxi (there are always a few waiting there) that will get you to the beach for a few US$ (walking is a little bit far and very hot). There you'll get on a very precarious but still safe sail boat and you will sail for about two hours total. The water is no more than a meter deep. It is a relaxing, calm activity. On the way back, there is no wind, so the man on the boat has to push the embarcation. Don't bargain the price too much, it's worth the money you pay him (25000 COP per...
Read moreThe site is impressive - however, the organisation is a disaster and totally irresponsible. I would not recommend it. Not respectful of people, treating them like cash machine. We went there asking them how long the trip would take and advising them that we have a flight to take as it was on the way to the airport. They promised with a big smile and high optimism that - of course, we will make it back on time - as soon as we took off, when we realised how far the flamingos were, we suggested timing might be tight - they reassured all fine. We asked twice during the trip and had to insist to go back. Results, we came back 45 min later, running through the mud and had answer from the boat driver “your time, your responsibility”. Ended up missing our flight - they just want to get tourist money and will promise everything which is truly disrespectful...
Read moreWorth a visit if you're interested in natural habitats and wildlife, but you don't need a tour! For international tourists- if going from Rioacha, go to the square where there is a fresh food market and there is a stall for a taxi company called Rioacha - Camarones (or similar) and they will take you to the boats for $5000 cop per person each way (seemed very cheap, maybe it was $15k, but he insisted!) (or take a bus and ask to stop at the turnoff to Camarones and get a Moto taxi, the town looked very safe don't worry) Then I believe the boat tours are $30-50k for a shared group tour. I paid $120k for an agency tour, and that's the cheapest I've seen!, for all that including a lunch at one of the main restaurants there (I'm assuming around $25k?) . You could save a lot doing...
