100% take this tour!!!
Mike is a charming and very, very knowledgeable guy. The butterfly jungle is magical and quite literally swarming with butterflies (and moths at night!). Not only that, but there is a plethora of other fauna and flora which he knows everything about. If you have even a tangential interest in entomology, visiting this place is a MUST.
Our knowledge of insects not only doubled but tripled after Mike's lecture and educational walking tour through the adjacent forest. We saw countless butterflies of all shapes and sizes, even some very rare clear-winged ones that look similar to dragonflies. My husband was actually able to catch one and he was apparently the first to do so on the tour in 20 years! We also saw a huge orb weaver spider, a stingless bee nest, termite nests, and all kinds of other fascinating insects.
The path through the jungle is clear, but our recommendation is to wear decent hiking shoes, because quick dashes off the beaten path must be expected on this quirky tour. Mike produces all kinds of premium and one-of-a-kind coconut and honey related products on his property, so make sure to take plenty of cash with you because you will want to bring some home.
You can really feel how much love and passion is put into this place. It's a true gem...
Read more100/10 recommend visiting Mike’s butterfly farm! I spent five nights at a nearby yoga retreat and spent almost the whole time on that property but luckily got to venture out to Mike’s and my trip wouldn’t have been the same without it. We got to go into the jungle and see so much more than I got to see at my resort. There were capuchin monkeys following us through the jungle, incredible birds, tons of butterflies, bees, bats, bugs, and so on. The pictures don’t quite do the butterflies justice but they were everywhere you looked. Mike is the coolest person. He is so knowledgeable, passionate, and has had the most incredibly interesting life experiences. He so clearly does this because he loves sharing his knowledge and land. I feel grateful I was able to meet him and spend so much time with him. Two hours for $35 is a steal - I think I would have paid 3x as much for this experience. I plan on ordering his honey as well. I can’t rave about this place enough and will definitely go again if I come back...
Read moreI took this tour many years ago, and I was not expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. Not because I didn’t think the tour itself would be good, but I just am not that interested in butterflies and have never been into “bugs” but it doesn’t matter. Just go take the tour. Mike is one of those people you don’t forget, he is clearly extremely knowledgeable in this area. I have been on tours before that are basically just someone reading a Wikipedia page, and this is definitely not that. He knows the answer to all the questions, and in addition is quite funny in my opinion. The tour was really cool, and we saw a lot of critters despite it being peak dry season when the flaura and fauna of the area are in general less active than during rainy times....
