We travelled here mid February. We were not bothered by bugs at all, but recommend wearing long pants due to prickly plants along the trail. We drove in from the west side (Highway 922) and it was about 30km of gravel roads & potholes. You absolutely need 4 wheel drive to get in here or else go on a boat tour. The park entrance does lock the gate at 4pm so plan to be leaving the park much earlier to be safe. It's about $13.50 USD to enter the park if you drive in. There are 7 hiking trails under 2km in the park. There is also a research centre that staff and volunteers stay overnight at, the washrooms are located here as well. We saw several monkey species, scarlet macaw, lizards, wild ponies and so many different kinds of birds. 4/5 stars because the roads are so bad.

We stayed at the Biological Station. The area is a dry deciduous forest. When we went near the end of March, the temperatures hovered around 100 degrees F. There is a beautiful wetland nearby that you can walk out into (but be careful of the crocodiles! We saw one feeding one morning when we went out on the dock to watch the sunrise. It was far enough away that we felt safe, but close enough to get a decent video. We also saw horses that appeared wild, but they probably weren't. There were also ctenosaurs (black iguanas), howler monkeys, white faced Capuchins (most near the mango grove), and spider monkeys, as well as coati, peccaries, and lots of cool insects!

A great place to visit and see wildlife in Guanacaste. We picked it because of the relatively proximity to the resort we stayed at (~2 hour drive). The tour guide, from Swiss Travel, and boat ride was very enjoyable and gave us access that we normally would not have. Rodrigo was knowledgeable of the wildlife and history of Costa Rica. I was amazed by all the topics he covered on the ride to and from Palo Verde. It was definitely a great educational experience for my kids too.

A must see! The road from Bagaces (hwy 922) is super rough, we had 4wd, and it would have been passable by car, but I could see where at certain times a car would have a tough time.

The fee is $12 (US) and try to have exact amount. The gentleman at the guard house didn't have change and spoke no English (nor should he have to, it's CR not US). Luckily I can hold my own in Espanol, and we worked through it! He was super nice,as are virtually all Ticos, and off we went.

We visited late afternoon and saw monkeys, pigs, parrots, pizote, and more. Take the sendero (trail) up to La Rocca to see an amazing view that you won't forget.

Don't forget lots of bug repellant, and long sleeves and pants. Also food and water. It's worth the trip.

I would personally recommend 4wd, had to use it twice in the park. 2.5 hours from Tamarindo area the day we went...

What else is there to say other than this place is absolutely breathtaking? An absolutely MASSIVE bird watching wetland is the central focus of this beautiful park.

It is quite a way off the beaten trail, but with boat tours available, hiking trails, and a picturesque wetland how can one pass it up?

It is also a beautiful display of the biodiversity of the area. On my way driving there, we went from a dense jungle down to a more arid landscape. The micro-biomes of changing flora are as much of a treat as the land itself.

Make sure to educate yourself of the dangers of this land though, like the Acacia Tree, which maintains a symbiotic relationship with ants and will harm you if disturbed. Or the snakes that hide in the tall grass. Be prepared! And have fun exploring this...
