Just minutes from Playa Samara (with its restaurants, shopping and amenities), and located next to Punta Indio (which is well worth figuring out how to get into… hint - there’s technically no direct entrance, but shimmying here and checking over there you’ll find a hole in a fence which’ll get you on the right track), Playa Carrillo offers a secluded, perfect, unoccupied beach experience - no frills, no amenities (so bring refreshments and snacks). As it’s just a quick hop from the awesome Playa Samara, though, a day at Playa Carrillo could easily be book-ended and/or punctuated by quick trips over for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The drive from Samara to Carrillo is scenic, winding, beautiful, with readily available parking right off the road. The area is very well-maintained, and - conveniently - you can camp (if that’s your predilection) at Mora Campground. Similar to Playa Samara, you’ll find a long, deep, fine sand beach perfect for families, or a relaxing swim, though we found the surf to be far less rambunctious than at Playa Samara. This place is perfect,...

It’s like floating in a giant bathtub here! The waves are so gentle, it’s perfect for floating and swimming and small kids. My favorite beach in the area for sure! Definitely not for surfing, and make sure to bring food if you want any at the beach. Unlike Samara, there is nothing built up on the beach. The most you will find are pipa fría (cold fresh young coconut to drink/eat) and a concoction that is somewhat like a snow cone from vendors with carts walking by. I hear you can walk from Samara beach in an hour along the water and then crossing over the road at the end of Samara, or there’s a bus, or biking, ATV or car. So many ways to go, so just make...

My new favorite beach in Costa Rica! The thing that struck me about Playa Carillo is how long and wide it is. There's tons of space and not that many people. The beach is lined with palm trees (and they're actively planting more), so there's shade and picnic tables everywhere. The best spot for sunsets is the part of the beach near Nammbu hotel. Because of that there will be more people there, but it's still very quiet. This beach is perfect for solo, couples or families that just want to go and relax at one of the nicest beaches on the planet. If you want to surf or party, go to Santa Teresa. If you want to relax and enjoy nature, come to Playa Carillo.
