If you're visiting Costa Rica, I highly recommend adding the Toledo coffee tour to your itinerary (even if you don't like coffee!!). It's an experience that will deepen your appreciation for coffee and leave you with lasting memories of a truly exceptional family-owned farm. ☕ The tour was led by Gabriel, the son of the owners who have been running the farm for over 80 years. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this was a family operation built on a deep love and respect for coffee.
What struck me most about the Toledo coffee tour was the emphasis on education and understanding the intricacies of coffee production. Gabriel was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, sharing with us the entire process from fruit to cup. He explained how their innovative methods were rooted in listening to and learning from nature itself. It was refreshing to see a family so dedicated to their craft and willing to adapt their practices based on the lessons nature had to offer.
Of course, no coffee tour would be complete without tasting the final product, and the Toledo farm did not disappoint. The coffee tasting was an absolute delight, with a range of flavors and aromas that showcased the farm's dedication to quality. But it didn't stop at just coffee. The farm also offered unique creations like coffee tea, coffee jam and coffee wine, which were both delicious and a testament to their creativity. They truly use all the fruit from the coffee, not leaving anything to waste (and why would you?!) ✨
All in all, the Toledo coffee tour exceeded my expectations on every level. Gabriel's down-to-earth nature and genuine passion for his family's legacy made the tour not only educational but also inspiring. The combination of hands-on learning, delicious coffee, and unexpected surprises like the coffee jam and art gallery made this tour truly...
Read moreLook no further - This tour was one of my favorite experiences in Costa Rica and I HIGHLY recommend it versus any other coffee farm tour. I also did the Doka tour afterwards to compare and I literally felt bad & embarrassed for those who hadn't experienced a coffee farm with the El Toledo family. You really and truly experience the real coffee growing and tasting experience with Gabriel and Ivette, who explain to you everything you need to know about how coffee grows and how to taste it properly. If you are also into organic coffee - Gabriel can answer all your questions about permaculture and what it actually means to be organic, as well as the challenges they face. Not only that, but Gabriel takes you through their beautiful farm where you taste and learn about all sorts of other plants growing in their "food forest" farm, among which the coffee plants also grow. I 100% recommend having lunch at his aunt's house, which was DELICIOUS and prepared in the most charming and authentic of homes - the best typical costa rican plate of Gallo Pinto and tortillas I had tasted the whole trip. There is also a Nature Path that starts from his aunt's house that I would go on - I didn't know about it and can't wait to go back and do it. I looked at several coffee farms near San Jose, did quite some research, and am so happy with my visit to El Toledo. I did this early on in my trip and it helped me understand the rest of the country better. I took a taxi from San Jose, and a taxi back, it's very easy and super safe. The ride there was also beautiful. It's in a region that has "the best climate in the world" and truly one of the most beautiful sceneries. Thank you so much for changing the way I taste and view coffee...
Read moreExceptional! Truly the best coffee tour in the best climate in the world! We took the Britt (ugh!) coffee tour two years ago - night and day.
Britt was giant disinterested corporation making way too many bucks off unaware tourists with a lackluster presentation and little stroll of what is not even a real Costa Rican coffee farm.
Toledo is a genuine coffee farm - heart and soul Costa Rica through and through and dedicated to sustainable coffee growing using as many parts of the coffee fruit as possible and as few resources as possible. Gabriel was So informative about coffee growing and farming practices in general. Truly a pleasure to learn from a farmer involved in the day to day operations of a small coffee farm, and with such dedication and passion for his work.
The tour experience was also very pleasurable. We tried three different brewed coffees to determine the different types of roasting processes, then were told which was light, medium, and dark roast. The explanation of the different processes and results was enlightening to this lifetime coffee addict. The coffee rice pudding was also delicious. Learning about coffee flour, too - whodda thunk such a thing existed? But, there's a dedicated general website: coffee flour . com
The walk through the hillside growing areas was beautiful. I skipped part of it - a little rugged for my over-60 non-athletic self.
Little shop has extremely reasonably priced coffee products and Costa Rica souvenirs.
