Beach itself is wonderful. Fine sand, a bit shadow. But no longer a "hidden beach". There were over 40 people at 12 o' clock and coming more.

We thought it would be a good idea to went there with bicycles from Coco. It was a BAD idea, don't do that, if you are not a professional biker (And we're not untrained either)!! It's more than 200 meters in altitude.

As other people wrote, there is a big construction site along the way, very dirty and if you unlucky, it's very loud from the machines in the background.

Moreover, don't go there, if it's windy outside! We couldn't sit or lie on the beach, because of the fine sand, pushing hard to your face. Trying to build a wall with a cloth, didn't worked, because wind is changing a lot. We leaved 30 mins later. For us, a horrible trip, not worth at all.

The beach itself could it be worth, if it's not windy, early in the morning, and you...

This beach was awesome! It has smaller, gentler waves than other nearby beaches. The sand is smooth and soft, with an occasional rock here or there.

But perhaps my favorite feature was the snorkeling. On the left side (as you look out to the water) of the beach there are some rocks. You can go close to shore in only 2-5 feet of water and see a few different fish. If you swim out a bit farther, in 8-12 feet of water, we saw: a school of maybe a 100 10" fish, dozens of sea urchins, puffer fish, and a 2-3 foot-long skinny ribbon-type fish. All of that in water that was pretty calm and easy to float there in.

Others have mentioned getting there. The road is now paved and you can park on the street. There are about 160 steps down to the beach on the path to the left of...

Playa Penca is a beautiful natural beach but getting there is a little bit difficult. The road to the beach is rough and while you can probably make it in a regular car, I would highly recommend an SUV that offers higher clearance. Four wheel drive is also recommended. Once you reach the parking area, it’s about a 10 minute walk to the beach. Going down is relatively easy, coming back up is strenuous. Take breaks along the way and you’ll be fine. The beach itself is gorgeous with clear water and some interesting snorkeling. It’s not the best snorkeling but it is good enough to keep you interested. When we were there sea urchins were out in large numbers. Be careful when entering the water and be aware not to step or touch them. Water shoes are...

We absolutely loved this beach! It is fantastic, clear water and some rocks along the edges that are fantastic for snorkeling. The fish viewing was incredible. We saw several types of fish, star fish, and a sea snake. The beach itself has many shade spots and a fine white sand. There was a local Tico making pina cold as with fresh shaved ice and crushed pineapple. Unfortunately, there is a very large hotel construction happening right on top of it. I hope the beach and snorkeling will be preserved, but it will definitely lose the locals' beach feel. I recommend getting there while it's still an out of the way beach. You do have to drive through construction to get there.

One of the most serene beaches we encountered in Costa Rica, but as others have said, the Waldorf Astoria hotel nearing completion (as of Early April 2025) has overtaken this beach. However, you are able to park along the road leading up to the hotel and then walk down to the pathway just to the left of the hotel entrance (in the corner of the traffic circle). I got the impression from construction workers that pathway is intended for public access to Playa Penca. That pathway down and behind the hotel is a few hundred steep but sturdy steps down to the beach with a railing nearly the entire way.
