This is in a National Park, so you need to pay to enter, but it’s around $13. The trails in the park are marked Easy, Moderate, and Difficult. What isn’t mentioned is that the road to the trail head is very long and steep. That road was probably the hardest part of the hike. Once you hit the trailhead, the trails are much easier. Admittedly I am not an athlete nor young, but on the return trip, we passed several groups of young fit adults, who looked exhausted, some asking us, is it worth it to keep going, how much further, are we there yet ;) I assured them it was worth it, and easier once you got on the trails.
We followed the first trail to the Old Witch tree. This is the trail that leads you through the beautiful pine forest, It was absolutely gorgeous. It was interesting that this dry microclimate was devoid of the usual ferns, vines, and jungle flora that is predominant in Costa Rica. Pretty much all there was here was soft dry earth, and beautiful majestic pines. The trail ends at a viewpoint that looks over the Cartago valley. Very beautiful, but for me it was the pines that were the star. After we followed a trail that took us around the back of the first trail, and was sort of under the Irazu Volcano. The view of the volcano was really beautiful, and just lucky, we passed a group of flowering trees that was swarming with hummingbirds (collabri in Spanish). If we had more time we would have liked to seen more, but we had a taxi picking us up at a predetermined time, Bring sunscreen, Bring bug spray (bugs weren’t bad though), and bring...
Read moreReserve your tickets online be aware if you are a local from Costa Rica you get charged less than if you are an outsider you get charged almost triple as outsider the big thing that I need to mention as well is that if you want to see the volcan you had to get there in the early hours they open at 7 or 8 we got there at 9:00 in the morning it was a perfect time for us to see everything without the clouds covering the view after that everything gets covered by the clouds we step down to one of the restaurants to have some food and we noticed the fog was really intense even though it was 11:00 in the morning so if you want to see this place you have to do it in the...
Read moreWe rented a house in the Pacayas region to arrive here at 8 am when it opened. The drive to the volcano was incredible!!!! The agriculture that was around the area was absolutely amazing. We were in the clouds until we got to the gates of the volcano! It was exceptionally clear and you can see the city, coast, even the neighboring volcano. There is no water in the crater but it was incredible to stand on the highest point of costa rica. Also you need to have reservation to enter the volcano, as for parking, you pay at the cafe. It was a...
