There are so many beautiful waterfalls here!
You have to buy tickets for both Catarata del Toro and/or Blue Falls at the Catarata del Toro office. You can buy tickets for just one for $15 or both for $25. Prices are a little higher if you pay by credit card (13000CRC for the combo ticket). Parking is free and there are clean restrooms at the Catarata del Toro office. There is also a little restaurant. We didn’t get anything, but prices looked reasonable.
We did the Catarata hike first. The hike had a lot of steep steps but it was very well maintained. Allow 1.5-2 hours round trip. You can’t swim at this one, but it’s worth seeing. The ticket booth says to take the white path down and the green path up, but there isn’t a lot of signage. There are several breaks in the path with no indication of which way to go. Change into your bathing suit at the restrooms at the top before heading to the Blue Falls parking lot.
It's a short drive to the parking lot for Blue Falls. There are no bathroom facilities there. There are lots of hills to climb/descent in this area. From the lot, it’s about a 20-30 min hike to reach a junction. There are 3 falls to the right and 3 to the left. If you’re pressed for time, the 3 to the right are nicer. They say you can swim in 5 of the 6 falls, but people were really only swimming in 1 of the 3 that we went to.
The guides are very friendly and helpful - giving us a hand to get over the rocks and offering to take family photos. The most popular swimming spot was the waterfall going to the right at the junction, and then further left falls at the next junction: Poza Azul Falls. Here the falls were short so you could slide down them. The water was refreshingly cold!
At $25+ for 7 waterfalls, this seemed like a good value (especially considering La Fortuna Falls was $20 for one waterfall). The road from La Fortuna is very rocky and full of pot holes. The road from San Jose is one of the steepest I have ever driven anywhere – be prepared to use lower gears!
We are slow climbers and take our time at each of the falls. We visited Catarata del Toro and 3 of the 6 falls at the Blue Falls in about 5 hours. If you are a little quicker at each stop and can climb faster, you can easily see all 7 falls in about 6 hours.
We really enjoyed our day here and these falls are...
Read moreI have no idea how anybody could give this place anything less than a 5 star rating. It was absolutely incredible. Hummingbirds everywhere. The walk down is a good workout, but nothing crazy for anybody in decent shape. For those not able to talk the full hike down, there’s at least 4 different spots you can stop at from above and get an absolutely breathtaking view.
We visited, easily, fifteen different waterfalls on our trip. They were all incredible, but nothing held a flame to this property. This spot is still somewhat undiscovered, but that’s going to change soon, because there’s no way not to blown away by it’s beauty.
If you’re considering making bajos del toro a spot on your travel list...DO IT. Do it. Do ittttt. The locals are kind and friendly. The town is quaint and lovely. And every single waterfall in the area is breathtaking. There’s so many to pick from. Give yourself at least three days. We stayed on property, which we’ll definitely do every time. It rained pretty much the whole time (we went at the peak of rainy season so it was expected), and that didn’t matter at all. It was still breathtaking.
The ride up was also easy, and the property is convenient to find.
Of all three spots we’ve visited in Costa Rica, this is the spot I will, without a doubt, visit again and again and again.
Go. Pack some warm clothes because the weather is cooler up there (and so beautiful) and go!! You will love this area if you are an adventurer or nature lover.
Do it. You’ll be SO blessed getting to experience this magical, majestic, and mighty property.
We will be back, probably within the next six months, just to visit this...
Read moreWe booked the Blue Falls light tour. By email the owner told us to call the day before as he said that depending on the weather the waterfalls are accessible or not. So I called the day before in the afternoon. I was told that it was a sunny day but that I should call back the morning after at 7 before leaving home. So did I and I was told : yes you can show up. We took 2 hours to access Catara del toro only 50 km away from home as the road to get there are very bad and full of holes. When we arrived it started to slightly Rain. The guide told us no problem we can do the tour anyway. 25 minutes walk he said. We hesitated...asked a second time if we should go or not. He confirmed. We really shouldn t have listen to him as the path were not path but only mud mud and mud. After 50 minutes and still not reaching the falls we decided to stop our efforts and go back to the car. We did half the way on our bare feet as our shoes kept sticking into the mud!!! We were very unpleased with this experience as the guide finally told us it as been raining cats and dogs since 2 weeks non stop 😠😠😠 that means they knew the roads would be in very bad condition but they prefer not to warn people to get their money. This is totally unprofessional and not acceptable. We live in Costa Rica since 2 years and we are Pura vida people. But we never saw something like this and we ll keep on telling people NOT to go there as the owners are not reliable and don t...
