CORALS have made the island of Zlarin famous for its centuries-old tradition of coral collection and jewelry making. Until the 18th century, people believed that corals were plants, but in fact they are small animals that petrify as soon as they are taken from the sea. They are very sensitive to temperature, which is why they are among the first victims of rising sea temperatures. They need more than ten years to reach a usable size. In Greek, “coral” means “daughter of the sea”, and according to legend, they were created when Perseus cut off Medusa’s head and threw it into the sea. The seaweed, covered in her blood, petrified and turned into precious red coral.

Highlight of our trip to Zlarin! Great experience, very well thought out museum, incorporating various means (photos, videos, voice, AR, VR, tactile elements, etc.) to explain historical and contemporary facts about corals 🪸, Zlarin, island people, coral harvesting practices and way of life in general. Staff is nice and gives a passionate introduction on the topic. You get a map of the museum and nice picture of alive coral. Souvenir shop is well equipped, with interesting items made in Croatia. It was a pleasure and we left impressed with new knowledge.

It's very lovely. The administrator is very passionate about the topic, he explained a lot of things to us & basically walked us through the first floor. Although the museum is small, it is interesting, because they integrated technology in all possible aspects to make the journey more engaging. I loved the idea behind the art piece on the last floor, it's brilliant honestly. And I really liked that with the museum map you get a pretty picture of the red corals on the back (awesome idea that all museums should take note of).
