Nugal Beach, located near Makarska on the Croatian coast, is a true hidden paradise for those willing to go off the beaten path. Reaching the beach requires a moderate hike through a forest trail that winds along rocky terrain and eventually descends a steep cliffside — sturdy shoes and a sense of adventure are essential. The walk may be challenging, especially under the summer sun, but once you arrive, you’re greeted by a stunning, secluded cove surrounded by dramatic cliffs and untouched nature.
The beach itself is small and made up of fine pebbles, with incredibly clear, turquoise water that invites you to swim and relax for hours. It’s peaceful and uncrowded, partly due to the difficult access, and it maintains a wild, almost untouched feel. It’s also known as a clothing-optional beach, so nudists are a common sight, adding to the laid-back, free-spirited atmosphere.
There are no facilities, shops, or shade, so bring everything you need — water, snacks, and sun protection are a must. Despite these limitations, or perhaps because of them, Nugal Beach remains one of the most beautiful and authentic beach experiences in the region. If you’re willing to make the effort to get there, you’ll be rewarded with serenity, natural beauty, and some of the clearest water you’ll...
Read moreEDIT (August 2024): Unfortunately, but there are some changes at the beach that those who still would like to spend here their vacation have to know. Plenty of people at the beach on Sunday. The water is still wonderful, and the picturesque view is still here, but there is no more division on two parts like there was in previous years. In the beach south part (former FKK), now there are definitely more textile guests. On Sunday it was no more than 10 naturists, all other - textile. So, please, before planning your trip here, take an account about this issue (someone even crossed out the sign on the rocks).
It is a beautiful and secluded beach 30 minutes walk through the pine forest from Makarska. There are no cafes on site, so it's worth taking a drink with you. The beach is divided into two parts: the first from the entrance - textile, and the other, near the rocks - naturist. Currently, the FKK part has decreased, although maybe in the high season (July-August) it will be half and half...
Read moreI captured an amazing photo of Nugal Beach from a cliffside after unintentionally following a barely visible path. After seeing a few people climbing, I assumed they were hikers just slightly higher up and decided to follow. This turned out to be a mistake, as the path quickly became extremely steep and unsafe.
Stuck mid-cliff, between the main lower and upper trails, it was too dangerous to go back the way we came. Eventually, we managed to reach some trees and carefully slid down, holding onto them for support to avoid falling. It was a genuinely stressful and risky experience, and not one I’d recommend. Days later, I was still pulling cactus spines out from the descent.
My strong advice: stick to the marked trails. It might be tempting to explore, but safety should always come first.
That said, when approached via the proper paths, Nugal Beach is absolutely breathtaking and well worth a visit. Just enjoy it...
