Winery Botaro — Attraction in Općina Konavle

I cannot recommend this experience highly enough. My wife and I enjoyed a private tour of this small family-run winery. Matea, one of the owners along with her brother, gave us a brief history of the winery and the area. We enjoyed 5 (generous helpings) of their own wines from the Rose, Chardonnay, Malvasia, Botarus (Their own blend) and their flagship Cabernet Sauvignon. Each wine was accompanied by homemade cheeses, bread and cured meat, all created at the site. It was informative but also very interesting and enjoyable. The amazing setting in this valley with views of the Croatian mountains and beside the vines really made this a spectacular day for us. We even had an opportunity to walk amongst the vines and see all of the different grapes used to make these beautiful wines. We then finished the day with 5 different homemade liqueurs to round the visit off nicely. There is a small shop where we purchased a few bottles to take home with us and it was great that there was no pressure to do so. To say that we had a great experience here is an understatement. Truly. I know it sounds so basic to say that but let me tell you, our visit to this family operation was second to none. We pulled up to a quaint and spacious family homestead, and were greeted warmly by Matea. We learned all about the liquors that are produced on premise and tasted each one, admiring the craftsmanship and history that goes in to these liquors. After tasting some fantastic (and I mean, fantastic. I don't say that lightly) family produced cheeses and meats, we moved on to wine. Good Lord the wine is phenomenal, truly. Our tastings were more than tastings; we got nice big full glasses of each one and were told exactly what to pair it with from the food in front of us. I tell you, this doesn't sound casual, but my God is it casual. Just talk, enjoy, ask questions, eat, smell, taste. It's incredible. My wife and I have done wine tastings all over.... Botaro is AMAZING. The family who owns it are SO welcoming and our amazing host, Matea (super sweet and knowledgeable woman - a member of the family who owns it!) walked us through every wine we tasted and even told us which food to pair with it! We also were treated to trying 4 of their specialty liquors, which was such a nice surprise! They gave us 4 FULL glasses of wine. So so so generous. The food spread was also incredible. Everything was so fresh and it was more than enough food for everyone! One of the best treats of the whole tour was that we were taken out to the vines and allowed to pick grapes and try them ourselves. That was SO unique and special - we have probably done 20+ wine tastings in Europe and the US and never got such a personal, in-depth experience at a vineyard.
