In the border area of the Učka Nature Park, in the village of Šušnjevica, only 20 km away from Labin, the Interpretation Centre Vlaski puti was opened, with hiking themed trails through the Nature Park "Učka" which are directly related to the life and activities of the community. Šušnjevica is known for its Romanian-speaking language, or Vlach, which is protected as an intangible cultural heritage of Croatia. Since the natural transfer from parents to children has been interrupted, this language has become extremely endangered, so the aim of the centre is to preserve the history, tradition and culture of the area. The museum with a media library is located on the ground floor of the renovated primary school, where we can see thematic roads across Učka called Contraband Roads. Of course this interesting name has historical weight. The contraband took place in the 1930s when the local residents used to sell agricultural products across Učka to the duty-free zone in Kvarner, which was established during the Italian rule when the "zona franca" or duty-free zone was declared. They carried 50 kilos of hens and chickens on their shoulders in cages, or other goods, and they would walk across the inhospitable mountainous terrain for 2 to 3 hours to reach Lovran and Rijeka. Smuggling of goods from the duty-free zone became one of the ways of survival of the then population.

Very interesting museum about the Istro-Rumenian community in Istria. It illustrates, through accurate and engaging description panels, the history, daily life and traditions of this little known yet fascinating population. We did appreciate that they had an Italian audio guide and the cordiality of the local supervisor. It is a place worth to visit as it provides a consistent anthropological background for those who want to know more about Ćićarija.

Wonderful small museum about the Istrian Vlah / Vlașko culture and language. Viviana and her colleague are doing an excellent job in promoting istro-vlah culture. We came all the way from Romania to listen to this language that is so beautiful and similar to ours. It is like a travel back in time. The hosts made us feel very welcome and gave a lot of interesting stories. We would definitely come back.
