In 1980 the southern part of the Zadar Archipelago was declared a national park. The name Kornati derives from the name of the main island in the group, Kornat. The park was set up to protect the waters, to allow all kinds of marine life to flourish, and to stop people building on the islands. The park is 36 km (22 miles) in length and 6 km (4 miles) wide and is made up of 89 islands of white stone. Nearly all the islands are uninhabited and have little or no vegetation. The islands are surrounded by clear blue sea, with jagged coastlines, hidden coves and underwater caves. The Kornati Islands were the peaks of a mountain chain about 20,000 years ago. When this area was part of the Roman empire, the main islands were holiday resorts, popular with the prosperous inhabitants of Zadar. Beautiful Roman villas with mosaic floors as well as fishponds and baths were built. During the long period under Venetian rule the islands, which were then covered with rich vegetation, were used as a base for the Venetian fleet. At present the Kornati Islands belong to the inhabitants of Murter, to the east, who bought them around the end of the 19th century to use as grazing for sheep and goats. The islands are bare and arid and are characterized by steep cliffs, stony ground and sinkholes typical of a karst (limestone) landscape. Sheep farming has impoverished the flora of...

Do you know which was the first city in the world to receive public lighting? No, it’s not London, Paris or New York, but the streets of Šibenik, a tiny medieval town in Croatia, were lit up in 1895. Not just that, Šibenik is also the oldest Croatian city on the #DalmatianCoast, established in the middle ages. It is less touristy but equally charming when compared with its more popular neighbouring cousins such as #Zadar, #Split and #Dubrovnik. Established in the 11th century, Šibenik is known as the gateway to the Kornati islands. Guarded by five fortresses, the pocket-sized town has an amazing coastal vibe and is very famous among music and history lovers. The beautifully preserved old town gives you the vibe of the 15th and 16th-century era. And perhaps, that’s why it even featured in Game of Thrones Season 5. This walkable city has a lot to see, such as the St. James Cathedral, St. Michael’s Fortress, St. Nicholas Fortress, St. John’s Fortress, Aquapark and a lot more. Most importantly, this is the only county to have two national parks – #Krka & #Kornati. So, when are you visiting Šibenik? This post is part of my ongoing #travelseewriteineurope series. Stay tuned for more updates. 📸 shot on @apple #iphone14promax, DJI Mini 2 & LumixS5II Thanks, @lovesibenik, for a great time and for providing some footage. #visiteurope #europediaries #travelseewrite #europe_gallery #europetrip #igerseurope #wonderful_places #worldtravelpics #bestvacations #unexplored #offbeat #beautifuldestinations #upoznajbalkan #balkan #CroatianExploration #CroatiaFullOfLife #offbeatplaces #gameofthrones #gameofthroneslocation

CROATIA’S NATIONAL PARKS 🏞️ Croatia is known for these breathtakingly beautiful waterfalls and crystal clear waters. 🏝️ There are many national parks in Croatia, the most popular of which are Plitvice Lakes, Krka, Kornati, and Brijuni, but there are more as well! Croatia has stunning seashores, beautiful rivers, and towering mountains. Really, there’s so much to do and see in Croatia, and visiting some of the national parks is a great way to do that. ✨ We spent a day at Krka National Park and were so impressed with the natural beauty 😍 Have you been to any of Croatia’s national parks? #croatiatravel #krkanationalpark #visitcroatia #croatiatravel #europetraveldestinations #europehiddengems
