José Martí Memorial — Attraction in Plaza

Located at the center of Plaza de la Revolución Square in the Vedado area of Havana, the José Martí Memorial stands as an iconic landmark. This impressive monument measures 142 meters in height and 78.50 meters in diameter, making it the tallest structure in Havana. It consists of a star shaped tower, a statue of Marti surrounded by six columns, and gardens. Its grandeur serves as a testament to the profound admiration Cubans hold for their national hero.

Upon arriving at the square at noon, we encountered sweltering heat, limiting our stay for long period. Regrettably this constrained us from visiting the museum and observatory tower. Next time then. Plaza de la Revolución is a pretty barren spot used chiefly for national parades and demonstrations. It's dominating feature is the José Martí memorial, a rather ugly (IMHO) stone clad concrete tower, that formed the centre piece of a massive urban development of the district which was completed in the 1950's. José Martí, who's effigy can been outside every school in the country, is a national hero who, though not a soldier, was killed during the War of Independence against Spain in 1895. On the ground floor of the tower are displays relating to the life of Martí and the planning and development of the plaza and tower. You can ascent to the upper levels of the tower via a lift to get rather truncated views of the city (due to the narrow windows) and a close up look at the vultures that hover and perch at those heights.
