Loved the castle. I would of loved more time to explore as that is why I took the excursion. We however were given only 10 minutes after the tour guide took us into three rooms to talk about famous pirates back then. Sadly this was what I wanted on my trip. I got separated from the group as we all dispersed .. DO NOT let anyone who seems to work there attempt to take your photo.. they will charge you for your own camera shot.
If ANYONE starts trying to give you a "tour" to explain rooms..you WILL need to tip them. And as you leave castle they want .more tips. I avoided this one as he was not dressed in any uniform. Just local wear.
Their is a restaurant, and a bunch of tourist souvenir vendors set up on path just before it.

Read moreQuite nice with fantastic views and lots of history. Best to find a guide or have some previous knowledge as locally the information is very very limited. As of March 2019 the bridge entrance is "under restoration" and you must climb down some quite steep wooden steps into the moat and up again to the entrance. Also the "cañonazo" (sunset cannon shooting) is discontinued until further notice due to the cannon itself needing repairs according the staff (if it takes much longer the way it is not stored/covered, it will probably not be useable within a few months). Overall a nice excursion from Santiago City albeit not a very long one if you do not have a guide to explain things as you go. P.s. Taxi there and back with waiting should...
Read moreThe world heritage listed Castillo San Pedro de El Morro was mightily built on the cliff at the mouth of Bay of Santiago, with a magnificent setting over the blue Caribbean. It was first planned to built in 16C to defend against pirates attack but the construction has been dragged for about 2 centuries. When it was completed, there were no more pirate attack around that area and so it was converted into a prison in 19C.
