The journey through the caves was around 20 minutes tops. According to my tour guide, the caves were under much water centuries ago, and the Indians used it as a hiding space from the Conquistadors. Today, one is able to walk through a portion of the caves and take a boat/canoe for the remaining portion. It was the canoe portion that I found most interesting. The water itself is a rusty, muddy color. Taking a closer look at the cave walls you are able to outline different things such as fish, crocodiles, the three ships that Christopher Columbus came with, etc. The locals say that this was the handy work of nature but I am a little skeptical. Read moreLiterally 20 minutes by car or bus from the Viñales hotel Los Jazmines or Hotel La Ermita, The Cueva del Indio or in English, “Indian Cave” is an extensive underground cavern with 10 to 20 meter high ceilings. The initial part of the visit includes walking through richly colored Stalactites and stalagmites, conical deposits emanating from the roof and floor of the cave. The second part of the trip is truly fantastic as you board a small boat which meanders through a river within the cave until you see light at the end of the tunnel and are left near a beautiful river where your bus will be waiting. The Indian Cave is a cheap excursion from all the hotels and well worth a visit while you are staying in Viñales or Pinar...

The price is 5 CUC (or 5 CUP for locals), before entering the cave there are 2 people pretending to be natives and asking for tips. The cave is about 200 meters of walking after which you get in the boat which takes you 100 meters into one direction, tells you the cave goes on for another kilometer and turns around, before you are allowed to get off you are handed a tip jar, after which the boat continues. at the end of the boat trip there is an Ox you can take pictures of (for money) and some gift shops, the good thing is the gift shops are...
