Mural of Prehistory — Attraction in Viñales

If I could paint on a rock formation, this would be the place - I was in awe looking up at the magnificent and in-depth detail of this piece of historical art done in the 60's. Even more incredible is how the artist worked out the design as it was created and executed on mollusk and sea organisms in rock. It is wild to think of what the rock formation is made up of, considering the ocean is quite far from this location.

What I found online: Prehistoria is the work of the former Director of Mapping at the Cuban Academy of Sciences, Leovigildo González Morillo. A master of neo-caveman artistry, Morillo undertook the massive project of portraying world history up until the age of humans on a rock wall in the Viñales Valley.

Spanning from early mollusks and other ancient sea-organisms, the rock face mural moves through the age of the dinosaurs and ends with three giant red human figures. Both lauded as brilliant in its simplicity, and decried as an eyesore, it has taken a massive effort from the community to maintain the mural after the death of its creator.

He commissioned that the cliff should be painted with the evolution of life in a natural sense of Cuba. VALLE DE LA PREHISTORIA – VIÑALES, PINAR DEL RÍO

Un lugar rodeado de belleza natural y con gran potencial, pero que puede generar una ligera decepción si esperas encontrarte con restos auténticos de la prehistoria.

Historia del lugar

El Valle de la Prehistoria no es en realidad un yacimiento arqueológico, como sugiere su nombre. Fue inaugurado en 1961 por iniciativa del gobierno revolucionario y cuenta con un mural gigante pintado sobre la roca del Mogote Dos Hermanas, que representa la evolución de la vida. Fue diseñado por Leovigildo González Morillo, discípulo de Diego Rivera. Lo curioso es que no hay ningún elemento auténticamente prehistórico: todo es arte moderno pintado sobre piedra natural.

Ambiente y servicio

El camino hasta el lugar es una experiencia por sí sola: paisajes de mogotes, vegetación exuberante y aire puro. Al llegar, impresiona el tamaño del mural, que mide más de 100 metros de alto y 120 de ancho. El sitio cuenta con un restaurante rústico con opciones económicas, ideal para descansar un rato y disfrutar la vista, así como una pequeña tienda de souvenirs donde se pueden adquirir recuerdos locales. El trato fue correcto, aunque no especialmente cálido.

Experiencia familiar

Para los niños puede ser una aventura visual impactante, por el tamaño y colorido de las pinturas. Sin embargo, es importante explicarles que no se trata de pinturas rupestres reales, sino de una representación artística moderna. Las niñas de La Tribu se emocionaron con los dinosaurios pintados en la piedra, pero se desilusionaron un poco al saber que no eran verdaderas huellas del pasado.

Valoración general

Vale la pena visitarlo como parte de una excursión por Viñales, especialmente por el paisaje del entorno. Pero si vas con expectativas arqueológicas o históricas reales, podrías salir un poco decepcionado. El lugar se siente un poco abandonado y sin suficiente contexto informativo para el visitante. Recomendamos ir en horario de mañana o tarde, cuando el sol no está tan fuerte y se puede disfrutar del mural sin tanto calor.
