I was told by a few people that Melios was a nice place to take children. I took my daughter there today and I really wasn’t prepared for what I saw. I thought it would be more farm type animals, but was shocked to see exotic animals from all over the world that really aren’t suited for living in such small enclosures and some that surely really struggle in Cyprus weather. The first animal we saw was a camel, it looked so depressed/stressed with patches of its fur missing and a massive open wound by its eye. As we went on it just got worse. Brown bears, I just don’t know how they survive the summers here. From lions, to a tiger in tiny enclosures, these are animals that need very large spaces to thrive. Not to mention all the beautiful birds stuck in tiny cages. So many of the animals looked completely stressed with fur/feather missing and open wounds. We didn’t make it round the whole place, I ended up taking my daughter to play in the playground and then we left. It’s been on my mind ever since and feel so sad to know that a place like this exists in Cyprus. This is such a small place, there’s no excuse for this to be allowed to go on. I understand that people love to see wild animals, but they don’t deserve to suffer like this. They need to be in the wild where they belong or at the very least in far larger spaces which I don’t think even exist in Cyprus. I feel sad that I contributed to such an establishment by visiting, but glad it’s been brought to...
Read moreI visited Melios Zoo some time ago, and while the experience was memorable in some ways, it left me with a sense of concern regarding the treatment and well-being of the animals. During my visit, I noticed that the enclosures appeared to be quite small, and many of the animals seemed to lack the natural enrichment that is essential for their physical and mental health.
The animals appeared to be in distress, with some pacing or exhibiting behaviors associated with stress due to limited space and stimulation. Additionally, some of the enclosures were not as clean as they should have been, which added to my concerns about the overall conditions in the zoo. It was clear that there were gaps in providing proper care and meeting the animals' needs.
While the zoo had a wide variety of species, I left with the feeling that more attention should be given to the animals' welfare, their living conditions, and the level of care they receive. A zoo should be a sanctuary for animals, offering not just safety but also a chance to live in an environment that encourages natural behavior and well-being.
If you're considering a visit to Melios Zoo, I recommend looking into the current state of the zoo to ensure it meets your ethical standards, especially regarding animal welfare. I hope that over time, improvements have been made to address these concerns, as it’s vital for any zoo to prioritize the health and happiness of...
Read morePoor animals... I can't say that the zoo is a good idea, but if animals are in good condition.. More or less.. The predators: lions, puma and others suffer heat and have very small cages(( the meat they do not eat enough and meat is everywhere on the floor and smells badly. They have to have even small pool to bath, but there is no... Only some ducks have water to swim, but mammals no. The eagle and crows suffer from heat too.. They do not have enough space to fly.. And the polar owls are sad too. As to capybaras- two оf them are I'll. One has wounds on her skin: some dermal decease.. The cows have problems with hooves: in real environment the hooves are grinded down, but in the zoo the cows have very soft floor and the hooves became very long and it's uncomfortable for them to move. The ostriches have all bald tails, half body bold!! Featherless.. They have stress.. There is a possibility to buy salad and feed animals. But some children make balls of salad and with screams throw them into animals!! There are no people who control their behavior. Sure the zoo does not have enough money to provide enough care to animals, but it's better to send animals to a better zoo... Or find opportunities.. May be visitors and citizens can donate or for example take an animal under guard: to become a monthly sponsor and for this money the animals will get treatment and better...
