The Artemis Trail, located near the summit of Mount Olympus in Cyprus' Troodos Mountains, is a fantastic experience for nature lovers and avid hikers. This 7-8 km circular trail offers breathtaking views, diverse wildlife, and a unique chance to immerse yourself in the beauty of Cyprus’ forests. The trail meanders through ancient pine forests, primarily populated with centuries-old black pines. These majestic trees, some over 500 years old, create a tranquil and shaded atmosphere throughout most of the hike. The path occasionally opens up, offering panoramic views over the island, with stunning vistas of coastal regions and surrounding valleys. You’ll also come across interesting rock formations and remnants of ancient trees that highlight the geological diversity of the area. Despite its length, the Artemis Trail is relatively easy and suitable for most fitness levels. The well-marked trail is flat with only gentle inclines, making it ideal for families and beginners. It’s a rewarding hike that doesn’t require expert hiking experience but still offers a sense of adventure. At around 1,850 meters above sea level, the cooler mountain air makes it a comfortable hike even in the warmer months, though spring and autumn provide the best hiking conditions. Along the trail, you may encounter various wildlife species, including birds and endemic plants, adding to the richness of the hike. Several signboards provide interesting information about the flora and fauna, as well as the history of the area. You’ll also come across ruins of a medieval fortification, which adds a historical dimension to the hike. A Must-Do Hike for Nature Lovers and...
Read moreReally nice trail for the first 3.2 km. Quite rocky in places, so not suitable for those who can't walk easily over bumpy ground. Easy enough to walk about 4kph if you want so 2hours is about right. Nice views and even some seating to rest if needed. The sign posts are ok but you must be observant to make sure you don't get lost when the path goes over dirt roads and when it gets the ski centre you need to go hard left next to the ski chalet which is not obvious. However after the ski centre the path starts to narrow and is mostly manufactured dry stone path which is collapsing in places. Then about 500m from the ski centre it reduces to about 30cm to 40cm wide path over stones placed on the mountain side and you can see previous path collapses below. At which point without axes and or ropes we turned back since we did not trust the path construction (so we did 7km in the end!). The issue being that there is a 500 foot drop immediately below you and you are not on solid rock so is unsafe. Also not suitable for young children or pets due to the long drops in places next to the path even up to this point. Not sure how this a difficulty 1 path, only from an elevation perspective. A real shame that there are these unsafe parts as the views are stunning and the geology, flora and fauna are interesting and labelled...
