Mill Colonnade — Attraction in okres Karlovy Vary

The Mill Colonnade (Mlýnská kolonáda) is a large colonnade containing several hot springs in the spa town of Karlovy Vary, Czeck Republic. The structure is one of the traditional symbols of the town. The Neo-Renaissance structure has a nave, two aisles and measures 132 m (433 ft) long by 13 m (43 ft) wide. There are 124 Corinthian columns. Twelve statues representing the twelve months of the year sit above the portico. There is a raised orchestra space for the spa orchestra which plays regular, free concerts. Architect Josef Zitek, who also designed the National Theater and Rudolfinum in Prague, designed the structure, which was built between 1871-1881. The original design called for a two level colonnade, but a lack of funds restricted it to one level. Construction proceeded very slowly and costs grew higher. The structure was initially reviled by critics and compared to a bed of carrots or a bowling alley; at the time it was finished, many believed it had blemished the center of town. The Mill Colonnade was extended in 1893 to include the Rock Spring. The structure was restored in 1982, and stone reliefs portraying historic moments in Karlovy Vary history were added to the orchestra space in 1995-1996. By 1949, the adjacent portion of the Tepla River was bridged over in front of the Mill Colonnade, creating a plaza. The Mill Colonnade was extended in 1893 to include the Rock Spring. If you visit Karlovy Vary with medical reasons you in any case will hear from your physician that local springs # 6 and 7 will be helpful for your liver and skin :). And while approaching them you'll inevitably meet this so styled building - architects could discuss details and you could simply measure steps following correct regime of prescriptions. There are a lot of people every time except the very morning - the first water intake :).

The square aside is beautiful in course of Christmas days with singers, wines, cookers and new year trees; and accompanied with flashing lights, certainly :). That's why we usually stay in Karlovy Vary these two festive weeks - to acquire moods and achieve some improvements in our health.

U kunt de molencolonnade bereiken als u vanaf de warmwaterbron in het stadscentrum over de Tržiště-straat (markt) loopt en de Lázeňská-straat oploopt langs Tržní kolonáda (marktcolonnade) op de linkeroever van de rivier de Teplá. De lente sijpelt zich in de promenadehal van de Mill Colonnade. De korte wandeling door het spacentrum is ongeveer 500 meter lang en duurt ongeveer 10 minuten.

De eerste houten promenadehal werd tussen 1792 en 1793 boven Nový pramen (nieuwe lente) naast het voormalige molenbad gebouwd .

Het was het eerste gebouw in zijn soort in Karlovy Vary waar de kuurgasten ook bij ongunstig weer konden genieten van het water van de bronnen. In het begin van de 19e eeuw werd de nieuwe bron dus populairder en gewilder dan de overige bronnen in Karlovy Vary. In 1811 werd de originele houten constructie vervangen door de Nieuwe Lentecolonnade, die ook door de Dresdener Johann August Giessel in Empire-stijl uit hout werd gebouwd.

De huidige molencolonnade werd tussen 1871 en 1881 gebouwd in pseudo-renaissancestijl naar het ontwerp van de vooraanstaande Tsjechische architect Josef Zítek . De feestelijke opening van de zuilengalerij vond plaats op 5 juni 1881 ter gelegenheid van de start van het kuurseizoen. In 1891 en 1892 werd een deel van Bernardova skála (Bernard's Rots) uitgesneden en verwijderd en werd een nieuw noordpaviljoen over de sijpeling van de Rotsbron toegevoegd aan de zuilengalerij. De grootste zuilengalerij in Karlovy Vary herbergt de sijpelingen van vijf minerale bronnen. De zoldergevel is versierd met 12 allegorische beelden van zandsteendie de maanden van het jaar voorstellen door de beeldhouwers Alfred Schreiber en Karl Wilfert. De orkestbak is versierd met allegorische reliëfs van de plaatselijke beeldhouwer Václav Lokvenc.
