Beer!!!

Velkopopovický Pivovar is best known for its Kozel beer, which has earned a loyal following worldwide. During the tour, you’ll have the opportunity to sample fresh, unpasteurized Kozel right from the source. From the smooth and malty Kozel Černý (Dark) to the crisp and refreshing Kozel 11°, the quality and flavor are exceptional. For those interested in something lighter, Kozel’s semi-dark and pale lagers are also available.

Tour Highlights • History & Heritage: The tour provides fascinating insights into the brewery’s founding in 1874 and its development over the years. • Hands-On Experiences: Visitors can try their hand at tapping beer and learn about the brewing process in detail. • Tasting Room: The guided tasting session is a standout feature, offering a curated selection of the brewery’s finest beers.

Accessibility

The brewery is easily accessible from Prague, making it a great day-trip destination. Public transportation and organized tours frequently connect to Velké Popovice, or you can drive in under an hour.

Summary

Whether you’re a beer connoisseur or simply curious about Czech brewing traditions, Velkopopovický Pivovar offers a memorable experience. The combination of rich history, scenic surroundings, and top-notch beer makes it a standout attraction. Highly recommended for anyone visiting the...

Really enjoyed the brewery tour. I took the "Kozel Express" train from Prague, which apparently runs every Sunday now and only takes about 30 minutes to get to Velke Popovice. This Sunday was their first trip. The train itself is one of the original ones and riding in it felt like taking a trip back through history. As a train enthusiast, it was an interesting, fun, and special experience to have.

Once in Velke Popovice, you have a short 10-15 minute walk through some trees and past a pond to the brewery.

The tour itself was very informative. The one I was on was in Czech, but they have a guidebook in English that you can use to follow along with. I had no trouble with it at all. The only con to the tour was that it felt a bit rushed. There are plenty of old photos and history on the walls to observe and read about, but the tour guide just quickly walked past them. Slow down next time please and let the guests absorb everything 😉

I especially liked the short film that was played during the tour (with subtitles in English) that explained the history of the brewery. We also got to try tapping our own beer during the sampling! I got to try both the light and dark beers.

Another highlight is the live mascot Olda the goat. You get to meet him at the end...

If you interested in beer brewing it’s a good chance to look inside the modern factory with a global market player Asahi. As an industry experienced I was very inspired by the quality management details. I was surprised only by unprofessional guide who tried to show his erudition except the brewery knowledge. Full of lie and disrespectful speech about Russia and Russian was absolutely stupid and provoked. For example the city of Užhorod or Ungvár belonged to Czechoslovakia 20 years only, in year 1938 it was returned to Hungary(!) by the First Wiener arbitration. This is historically the Hungarian city. The city was not “stolen” as he said by Russians , it was given to Ukraine wich was the part of USSR. All other negotiations Czech Republic may carry with Ukraine as a state. But anyway according to this man Russians will...

I have no idea what the truth is, but it is said that beer was brewed in Velke Popovice as early as 1560, when the then owner of the village, Jiří of Krejštan, had a fortress built right on the site of today's oldest brewery building. If that's the case, it's pretty strong tradition! Production was dampened by the Thirty Years' War and only restarted in 1871 thanks to the activities of František Ringhoffer. The year 1874 is the basic date of the modern history of the Velkopopovický Kozel, whose emblem was supposedly created by a "certain" French painter. The brewery yard is nicely landscaped and maintained, unfortunately I was here long after the season in bad weather, so only the "Goat Shop" was open. It must be great to be here in the summer.

we rum to the place after the factory visit as a crazy rainstorm was hitting the village. the place was literally flooded 🫣 but the staff was super nice and still prepared our food and drinks despite the fact that everyone was busy trying to keep the place running as the heavy rains completely soaked the terrace and the entrance. the food was super delicious, fresh hot traditional Czech cuisine and we drink the best tank beer here 💕🥰 definitely recommend!!
