Muzeum T. G. M. Rakovník (dříve městské, později okresní) vzniklo v souvislosti s přípravami a sběry na Národopisnou výstavu českoslovanskou v Praze v roce 1895. Bylo slavnostně otevřeno v budově chlapecké školy 24.7.1898 u příležitosti 100.narozenin Františka Palackého. V roce 1907 se sbírky přestěhovaly do prostor městské spořitelny a jejich správa byla svěřena Janu Rennerovi. Pozdně barokní dům s pozdně gotickými sklepy poblíž kostela, zvonice a Pražské brány dotváří snad nejhezčí část centra města.

The T.M. Rakovník Museum (formerly the Town District, later District Museum) was created in connection with the preparations and collections at the Czechoslovak Ethnographic Exhibition in Prague in 1895. It was ceremonially opened in the Bohemian School Building 24.7.1898 on the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of František Palacký. Z venku se zdá muzeum malé, ale uvnitř jsou vystavovací prostoty rozprostřeny do čtyř pater. V každém je expozice zaměřena na jiné téma. Všechny se vztahují k Rakovníku nebo rakovnickému okolí. Zajímavá je historie výroby obkladaček a bitvy, která proběhla u Rakovníka v roce 1620. Nejzajímavější je ale tzv. Rakovnický poklad, který je cca 1500 let starý.
