The area of the Bohemian Central Mountains is either completely out of your mind or you fall in love with the places. Ever since Lovosice, it looks like a fairy tale scenery cut by science fiction novel. One of the dominant peaks of Ústí nad Labem is the Vysoký Ostrý Hill, which is one of the most beautiful views of the entire pearl of Bohemia and about 2 km northwest of it, the ruin of Střekov Castle, whose walls still exceed the Labe's surface by a hundred meters.
The first mention of the castle dates back to 1319, when the King of Bohemia, Jan Lucemburský, decided to build a guard station on the Elbe River to ensure the safety of the Elbe sailing and to fulfill the custom house duties. A number of nobles alternated in owning the castle, some of whom had already armed clashes between them. At the end of the 16th century the Lobkovic family became the owner of the castle. Střekov Castle suffered much during the wars in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was only brought life in the 19th century during the Romantic era of the development of tourism.
Today you can choose to have a commented tour or go through the castle yourself with the accompanying text. The choice is up to you. Read moreDecrepit, unmaintained and forsaken.
It looks nice from the outside, however the Lobkowicz family, who rules the castle, did a bad job at maintaining it. The castle is made of stone but they patched holes with clay bricks. This creates a jarring and incongruous appearance.
There is little to see inside. They did a poor job in placing a handful of replicas here and there. Some of the art was interesting though and I was fascinated by the Lobkowicz family tree but that is very few and far between.
The entry fee is similarly high to well-maintained castles such as Mortizburg. The walls and ceilings are largely gone. There is a singular watch tower with nothing up there.
Nothing is left from medieval times and it is very unimpressive. Youcan enjoy the view and get something to eat and...
