Dan Bihari Temple, Barsana — Attraction in Uttar Pradesh

"This place is known as Dāna-garh. This beautiful place is on top of Brahmācala-parvata (Brahma-parvata). One day, rasika Śrī Kṛṣṇa and Subala Sakhā were sitting here as tax collectors, eagerly awaiting the arrival of Śrīmatī Rādhikā and Her friends, who were to pass this way carrying various articles of worship on the pretext of going to worship the Sungod. Upon seeing Her, Śrī Kṛṣṇa obstructed Her path and rebuked Her, saying, “Who are You? And where are You going?”

Śrīmatī Rādhikā answered, “Don’t You know who we are?” and She fearlessly continued forward.

Kṛṣṇa and Subala Sakhā again obstructed Her way. Kṛṣṇa said, “Don’t You know that I have been appointed by the king of this state to collect taxes here? You cannot pass without paying tax. Every day, You carelessly strut through here carrying a variety of valuable items, and You never pay tax. Halt! Pay the tax and then You may pass.”

Viśākhā then spoke in a stern voice: “This is Rādhikā ’s king­dom. Vṛṣabhānu-nandinī Śrīmatī Rādhikā is Vṛndāvaneśvarī, not anyone else. How have You become the tax collector here without receiving Her permission? Your offence is inexcusable and for it, You must suffer.”

Śrī Kṛṣṇa replied, “Don’t talk so impudently. Kandarpadeva (Cupid) is the king of this place. Every day you come and go through here, secretly carrying various expensive items, but you never pay any tax. This has angered Mahārāja Kandarpa, who has sent Me here. If you refuse to pay tax, then I will arrest you all and bring you before the king. You will have to suffer whatever punishment he hands down to you.”

Hearing Kṛṣṇa’s words, Viśākhā replied, “What can Your king do? Our queen is Vṛndāvaneśvarī, the queen of Vṛndāvana. In Her presence we fear no one. We are well acquainted with the prowess of Your king, whose pride is shattered to pieces by the arrow-like side-long glances of Śrīmatī Rādhikā.” Having said this, all the sakhīs moved forward, keeping Śrīmatī Rādhikā up front.

Kṛṣṇa stepped forward and stood in the middle of the narrow path of Sāṅkarī-khor. “O impertinent women of Vraja, you fear­lessly cross this place daily, hiding various kinds of jewels. Today, without fail, you must pay the tax on these jewels.”

After such joking words and much laughter, Kiśora-Kiśorī enjoyed various amorous pastimes in a solitary grove, and all the sakhīs became filled with bliss. The temple here is called Dāna Mandira.

दानगढ़

बरसाना में गहवर वन स्थित श्रीकिशोरी जू की मानलीला स्थली मानगढ़ के पास स्थित दानगढ़ में श्री राधाकृष्ण की जो लीला हुई ईसके बारे में जानलें । बरसाना श्रीराधा रानी जी की लीला स्थली।

"महादानी वृषभानु किशोरी तुव कृपालोकन दान दै री, तृषित लोचिनी चकोर मेरे तुम बदन इंदु किरनि पान दै री......."

इस पद में करुणामयी श्री किशोरीजी को महादानी कहा गया है। दानगढ़ में कन्हैया ने श्रीजी ( श्रीराधा) से प्रेमदान माँगा था। ब्रह्मांचल पर्वत पर स्थित जयपुर मंदिर के समीप ही दानगढ़ में श्रीदानबिहारी जी एवं श्रीराधारानी की युगल छवि के दर्शन है। बाहर मंदिर के प्रांगण में एक रासमण्डल डोल भी है। दानगढ़ में ठाकुरजी श्रीकिशोरी जी के चरणों को स्पर्श करके उनसे दान माँगते है।

एक दिन रसिक श्रीकृष्ण दानी बनकर सबल सखा को लेकर यहाँ पर सखियों के साथ श्रीराधारानी के आगमन की प्रतीक्षा में उत्कंठित हो रहे थे। श्रीराधा सखियों के साथ सूर्य पूजा का बहाना कर पूजा के विविध द्रव्यों को लेकर इधर से निकल रही थीं। उन्हें देखकर श्रीकृष्ण उनका मार्ग रोकते हुए डपटकर बोले, तुम कौन हो ?? कहाँ जा रही हो ?? श्रीराधा ने उत्तर दिया, क्या तुम नहीं जानते हम कौन है ?? और बेधड़क होकर आगे बढ़ने लगीं। श्रीकृष्ण ने सबल सखा के साथ उनको रोककर कहा, क्या तुम लोग नहीं जानती कि मैं यहाँ के राजा का बैठाया हुआ दानी हूँ। बिना दान दिए हुए तुम लोग यहाँ से नहीं निकल सकती। तुम लोग प्रतिदिन नाना प्रकार के बहुमूल्य द्रव्यों को लेकर यहाँ से बिना दान दिए ठुमक ठुमक कर चली जाती हो, लेकिन आज नहीं जाने दूँगा, दान देकर यहाँ से जाओ। विशाखा सखी कड़ककर बोली, यह श्रीराधा का राज्य है। वृषभानुनंदिनी श्रीराधा ही वृंदावनेश्वरी हैं। बिना उनके आदेश के तुम यहाँ दानी कैसे बन बैठे ? तुम्हें इसका दंड भोगना ही पड़ेगा। ऐसी युगल लीला पर हम सब बलीहार जाते हैं...

This is another pastime place on top of the Brahmagiri Parvata where Krishna and His friends would try to extract taxes (dana) from the gopis. There is a temple here dedicated to this pastime of tax collection known as the Dana-bihari Mandira. This spot is also known as the Danagad peak (the mountain peak of the tax collection pastime).
