Bornholms Kunstmuseum — Attraction in Bornholms Regionskommune

This museum makes the art displayed interesting by relating the often provincial paintings to the museum's surroundings. It's located by the sea, in a location much the same as what has attracted artists to Bornholm through centuries. You can immediately relate the paintings of villages, fishermen, nature and seascapes, to what you see around you, and follow the varying interpretations of Bornholm nature and light up to the present.

The architecture is at surface the usual white modernist temple, but unfolds with surprises through the rooms in varying material choices and a great use of colour. Sights of the surroundings is available through windows and openings, and even by a footbridge that takes you over the pastures...

Some of the art is great, but it is not a pleasant experience visiting. The museum is excessively overheated, even with windows open. On a cold day, every visitor is in T-Shirt to cope. This may be due to the outdated lighting system: it’s the old, now prohibited lightbulbs used throughout and they heat up the place. I et dejligt naturområde kaldet Helligdomsklipperne ligger et meget smukt kunstmuseum. Det blev indviet i 1993 og udvidet i 2003. Det er tegnet af arkitekterne Johan Fogh og Per Følner fra Lyngby og det rummer over 4.000 kvadratmeter fordelt på tre niveauer, således at bygningen følger terrænets fald mod kysten. Overalt er anvendt gedigne materialer: mursten, granit, sandsten, træ og zink. Langs den sydlandske gade er der forskellige udstillingssale, auditorium, café og museumsbutik. Igennem hele gaden risler den gamle Helligdomskilde igennem bygningen og ned ad trapperne og til enden af bygningen. Det er mageløst og vidunderligt fundet på. Vandets helbredende kraft erindret fra Middelalderens kilde og indført i moderne arkitektur. Museet huser en stor samling af Bornholmermalerne i fortid og nutid.
