Been to many places like these, in multiple countries no less, and although this place has more than just tents that the actors bring themselves, that's all it consists of. The management doesn't feel like it wants to see any improvement, off season, there's mainly just a bunch of empty buildings to go into, despite it being advertised as always being active. The locals who do "work" here off season are often unpaid as a sense of just feeling useful, but with that comes the issue of these participants having mental health issues of them being so desperate for social contact, that most of them feel off when engaging with them, if they're even around.
The only time you feel any spirit in this place, is the scheduled prime time, when it's full of foreign guests who come there to host shows, entertain and sell their wares. Or, when for example, schools schedule day trips to give kids a medieval life experience, that's usually when they bring in their paid staff so that it at least doesn't feel dead as long as the kids are still around.
Compared to the other places in Europe I've been to, it's nothing but a tourist trap with no passion for the theme and has no goal. And the only thing that keeps it afloat is piggyback riding on external influences and none of their own.
To get 5 stars, I strongly suggest you sort out management, bring in some people who actually want to be there and love the culture surrounding medieval fairs and the lifestyle/culture it entails, stop the false advertisements about it always being active when it's clearly not, stop being rude to staff and people making suggestions, and start an actual community so that the business can grow instead of falling into a pit of self...
Read moreWe did the guided tour at Hammerhus and the treasure hunt both in German.
The guided tour was excellent, tailored by the guide to the mixed audience for adults and kids. Highly recommended.
The treasure hunt was also great fun. It was incredibly well planned and we indeed visited alot of places we would not have seen otherwise. It is made in a way that it is fun for different age groups, so really a whole family adventure. The only negative I can say is that - even though we could combine it with many other activities over the week, it became a bit of stress to finish everything in time. So only recommend for active tourists.
The center itself is located beautifully in nature and visiting indeed feels like time travel. The excellent and extremely friendly actors are definitely...
(Hertug hans fest i Haderslev).
