So me and my girlfriend are tourists that do not speak spanish. We went to Jarabacoa for canyoning and could not find an appropriate agency so we asked at the reception of our hotel. They gave us the number of Jaraventura. We called them and the english speaking woman explained that there will be a tour on the following day and that we need to bring clothes that can get wet and we need to come in sneakers/sport shoes as well as the tour would cost 60USD pP and they could pick us up at the hotel at 9:30 AM. So we booked the tour.
On tour day a truck arrived at our hotel and picked us up to the Jaraventura base where we got our equipment, signed a legal disclaimer and payed the tour. The tour guides could speak english to instruct us to the gear and were also making some jokes. Since it was offseason me and my girlfriend had a private tour with two guides. Belongings could be stored at the base or as in our case on the truck.
To the tour itself: We drove with the truck above the baiguate waterfall to climb, hike, zipline, slide, swim, alongside and in the river to finally reach the waterfall to rope down from the saltos top. During the tour we have also seen some snakes, guava trees, and avocado trees. The guides were very trustworthy but also funny and tried to explain and show us interesting things during the trip. If u speak spanish then it definetly will be a funny/exciting trip. After baiguate they drove us back to the hotel and we tipped the guides.
I have to mention that i came in shorts which i regreted a bit since we also walked through some jungle/bushes, so make sure to bring light clothes that fully cover your skin and dont get to heavy when they are wet.
All in all a great experience and in my opinion absolutely worth...
Read moreMy girlfriend and I went on the River Trekking and Rafting tours over two days. Apparently the river trekking is new, and we really enjoyed it. It starts with a short hike down to the river, then you navigate down the river including some small falls and one zip line, before one more small hike to finish at the base of a big waterfall. It's a bit like canyoning, but you rely more on your own abilities to get up and down the various obstacles, rather than using ropes for rappelling. It's not strenuous, and the guides are really good at helping you navigate the river safely. My main advice would be to wear water shoes, we wore regular hiking shoes and cleaning out the hefty amount of sand was quite difficult.
The rafting was equally as good, I don't think we've had that many laughs in a while. The day we went the river was flowing fast, but none of the rapids felt too scary, just the right amount of fun. Just listen to your guides instructions, hang on, and enjoy the views and the refreshing river water as it blinds you unexpectedly.
Jaraventura were always really good to deal with. We had a small misunderstanding about a hotel pickup and they fixed it immediately. If you're in Jarabacoa and looking for some fun half day activities you can't go wrong with...
Read moreOverall we enjoyed our river rafting. The staff was very friendly and easy to be with. The only issue we had was there was some poor choices made by the staff that we felt were a bit unsafe. At the bottom of a small set of falls they pushed rafts under the falls. Our raft then came over the falls and landed on top of the other raft. This is very dangerous as our raft had 6 people and landed on top of a raft with only 4 people. Had any of them been pushed in they could have been held under the falls and been unable to get out with two rafts on top. The guides then wanted to do the same thing to our raft as the next raft approached the falls so I know it was no accident. We paddled away despite the guides attempts to push us under the falls. The lead guide saw this when he came down in the last raft and did seem upset so I hope it is something they stop doing. Besides that it was a great experience. Last note they don’t have wetsuits and the river is chilly so if you have one it would be...
