I've been visiting the Dominican Republic since I was a kid, and as an adult, I enjoy it even more. On my current visit, I had just arrived at the Malecón with my cousins and friends. It was crowded with other groups having a good time with coolers and bottles. We had been there for only five minutes when the police arrived. It seemed like a routine patrol as no one was moving from their spots.Suddenly, I heard my female cousin yelling at us to get in the car. Thankfully, she was alert because an officer was approaching us and was ready to pepper spray us without warning! We didn't have any music playing or liquor present. Why were we singled out?This experience was so disheartening. As a woman and as someone often called an American because I wasn't born in the D.R., the abuse these authorities show and their disregard for individuals in the country is appalling. It was scary and embarrassing, but I’m glad my cousin was alert.The Malecón is so famous and beautiful, but this incident has now tainted it for me.
