My family and I stayed for our first time at the campground on Memorial Day weekend and we absolutely loved it and enjoyed ourselves. It was so peaceful especially at night listening to the river flow and the wind which just made it so much more relaxing. Our campsite was very nice and big enough to accommodate us. It was convenient to the bathhouse / restrooms which were very nice and were constantly cleaned well which we loved although it could be updated on certain things. Our kids had a blast at the playground and loved riding their scooters around the campground because they had plenty of space. They also enjoyed getting to hold the snakes during the snake showing event they had. We really liked the fact that the Park Rangers made their rounds throughout the day to ensure everyone's safety and make sure everything was ok at each campsite. For those of us that just love to get away from home for a few days that don't hike or go floating down the river it would be nice especially for kids if the owner would consider putting a splash pad in to give kids something else to do while during their stay. The playground is very nice and has different play equipment to play on it just needs to be pressure washed or cleaned really good. Overall we were very pleased and happy during our stay and will be going...
Read moreI was there last week and campground portapotties are still full. There is no toilet paper in any of them either. The whole campground was full of tent campers.
I gave this state park a 5 star when I was there about last spring/summer 2023, but I'm changing my review to a two star. People visit here all year and need to use the porta-potties. The campground toilets have about all that they can hold. They haven't been emptied since last summer. Disgusting isn't a strong enough word to describe what I saw.
Suffice it to say that if I had sat down on one of those toilets, my whole butt would have been soaked in the nastiest mess that I've ever seen!! They must not get funds from either the atate or the feds enough to mainrain the primitive area but someone is collecting fees for camping there. Obviously, its not enough to buy what this place needs.
The trails are lined with posion ivy and stinging nettle and not suitable for youngsters. I always enjoy the nature hikes here. Be careful not to get into the poison ivy and stinging nettle, both of which will make anyone miserable. Watch for snakes and keep young...
Read moreWe LOVE CAMPING and the Outdoors, so the Hiwassee / Ocoee State Park is a great escape for everyone from families, to couples, groups of friends, or just for some good, safe alone time with nature. It's not too far from civilization and is close enough if you were to need anything. Our campsite reservation was super quick & easy! We reviewed the sites available, the accommodations available for that site, the map of other nearby sites and hiking trail, water entrances. We also viewed photographs of each site to notice if shade is available, proximity to other sites/needs, level campground, firepit, or grill availability. Everyone was super friendly, but make sure you purchase or bring your own firewood if you plan on making a fire for smores....I mean why are you camping if you're not gonna act like a pyro and build a HUGE CAMPFIRE so you can cook hotdogs, and roast marshmallows to make s'mores. Reserve your spot NOW, have fun, and don't be afraid of the dark after telling some fantastically scary Ghost Stories...
