Scenic Hike with a Few Surprises

We hiked here from Alausí—about 8 km—and then continued another 4 km to Nizag. We’d heard there was a bus back to Alausí from Nizag, but that turned out to be incorrect, so we ended up hitchhiking back.

The viewpoint itself is in a state of disrepair. The bins are overflowing and look like they haven’t been emptied in years, and the buildings on site are also quite run-down.

That said, the journey is absolutely worth it. The views along the way are stunning, and the hike is a great experience overall. I did the route in a pair of well-worn running sneakers, which were okay, though sturdier shoes would definitely be better—especially with a few damp and muddy sections along the trail.

Fantastic views of 3 valleys. You can see the train making its way between Alausi and Sibambe, but you won't see it taking the switchbacks as they are below the viewpoint. The gate was locked and unattended when we visited, but there is enough space to squeeze between the bars...

Nice hike, coming from Alausi. Alternatively, drive by 4x4 up to the trail entrance. Nice view into the valleys and Sibambe train station. Make sure you go on a day with good weather forecast.
